Watch Revisions
Monthly payroll figures undergo routine revisions as additional reports arrive. The August 2026 release revised prior months upward by 55,000 combined jobs. Treat first readings as preliminary and note revision direction to assess reliability.
Check Underutilization
The standard unemployment rate excludes marginally attached workers, discouraged workers, and those employed part time for economic reasons. These groups appear in separate tables rather than the main figure. Consult alternative measures for a fuller picture.
Assess Industry Breadth
Job changes vary across sectors. The August report showed gains in food services, local government education, and manufacturing, while information employment declined. Check whether growth is widespread or isolated, as concentrated gains may signal less durable momentum.
